PSHRC Orders Independent Food Testing Lab in Chandigarh

PSHRC Orders Independent Food Testing Lab in Chandigarh

Significant Update

The Punjab State and Chandigarh (UT) Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has mandated the establishment of an independent food testing lab in Chandigarh. The move aims to curb food adulteration and protect public health by ensuring rigorous testing of milk and dairy products.

Stricter Monitoring of Milk and Dairy Products

Following reports of substandard food, the commission directed authorities to step up surveillance of milk, paneer, and other dairy products sold in the city. Nearly one in three samples tested in Chandigarh over the past three years failed quality checks. In 2024–25 alone, 19 out of 36 samples did not conform to standards, highlighting serious health risks.

Increased Inspections and Surveillance

The PSHRC instructed food safety officers to maintain continuous monitoring of wholesalers, suppliers, hotels, restaurants, dhabas, and sweet shops. Authorities must increase random sampling at manufacturing units to detect and prevent the sale of tainted or harmful products.
