Rajasthan High Court Demands Action on Food Safety Failures

Rajasthan High Court Demands Action on Food Safety Failures

Report

Taking suo motu cognisance of poor enforcement of the National Food Security Act and the Food Safety and Standards Act, the Rajasthan High Court has issued notices to central ministries and top state officials. Justice Anoop Kumar Dhand directed them to submit a report by July 30, explaining what action they have taken so far. Justice Dhand criticised authorities for failing to provide nutritious, safe food. He noted that poor-quality and unhealthy foods are driving malnutrition and obesity, while also harming children’s mental development. “When the health and welfare of the future generation is at stake, the court cannot close its eyes,” he stated.

Court Stresses Need to Promote Traditional, Healthy Foods

Quoting Mahatma Gandhi — “It is difficult to remember even God on an empty stomach” — the court highlighted how junk food and carbonated drinks damage children’s physical and mental growth. Justice Dhand urged officials to promote traditional, seasonal, home-cooked foods and to teach children about the benefits of a “grandmother’s kitchen.”

Government and FSSAI Held Accountable

The court held the government and FSSAI responsible for upholding food safety standards and stopping the sale of junk food in schools. It issued notices to the ministries of home affairs, food, child development, education, FSSAI, and several senior state officers, demanding detailed responses.
