More than 70 students fell ill on Friday night after eating food served at the hostel of Vinayaka Mission’s Kirupananda Variyar Medical College & Hospital in Seeragapadi, Salem. Many students began vomiting and fainting and were immediately admitted to the campus hospital. Their condition is now reported to be stable.
Officials Inspect Kitchen and Dining Hall
After the incident, officials from the health and food safety departments conducted an inspection of the hostel’s dining hall and kitchen on Saturday. Their preliminary findings pointed to contaminated water used for cooking. The team collected water samples for laboratory testing.
Unhygienic Conditions Found, Kitchen Sealed
Officials noted poor hygiene in both the kitchen and dining area. They removed all food materials and sealed the kitchen. An officer stated, “The food safety department has ordered a complete halt to cooking until the investigation is completed.”
