Key Development
During a discussion in the Lok Sabha on July 31, actor, singer, and BJP MP Ravi Kishan raised a consumer-centric issue: why do the same snacks vary so much in size and cost across India? His remarks during Zero Hour highlighted the lack of uniformity in pricing and portion sizes of everyday foods like samosas and dal tadka.
Inconsistent Samosa Sizes and Prices Raise Consumer Concerns
Kishan pointed out that some outlets serve small samosas while others offer large ones, and the price fluctuates just as wildly. He noted that dal tadka could cost ₹100 at one place and up to ₹1,000 in another, even when the portion size remains unclear. These discrepancies, he argued, create confusion for consumers and suggest the need for a national standard.
Call for a Regulatory Framework
Kishan urged the central government to introduce a law that regulates both portion size and price for commonly sold food items. He argued that just as the government has introduced reforms in other sectors, it should now look into food pricing, especially in the informal and restaurant sectors. A standardised approach could help consumers make fair comparisons and informed decisions.
Push for Menu Transparency
Kishan also demanded that restaurants and eateries provide clear information on ingredients and portion sizes in their menus. He criticised the current practice where most menus only show the price, leaving customers in the dark about what they’re paying for. “Customers have the right to know what they’re eating and how much they’re paying,” he said.
