Intensified Inspections During Mandala Season
The Food Safety Department has intensified inspections in Idukki district, Kerala during the Mandala season. Officials are actively inspecting bakeries, hotels, chip shops, and other eateries in areas frequented by Sabarimala pilgrims.
Over two days, officials inspected 35 shops in Kumily, Vandiperiyar, and Kuttikkanam. With the help of a mobile laboratory, they seized and destroyed used oil from six chip-making shops. The team issued notices to seven shops, imposing fines for operating without a food safety license or registration and maintaining unhygienic conditions. Additionally, eight establishments received instructions to rectify deficiencies.
Ongoing Inspections
Peerumedu Circle Food Safety Officer Dr. M. Mithun led two squads that conducted daily and night inspections. The department plans to strengthen inspections further in the coming days to ensure food quality.
Joint Departmental Efforts
Joint squads from the Food Safety, Revenue, Legal Metrology, and Health Departments have also initiated inspections. During the Mandala-Makaravilakku season, numerous temporary shops cater to Sabarimala pilgrims, especially in areas like Kumily and Vandiperiyar. These shops primarily sell chips, halwa, and spices. However, many are reportedly operating without adhering to proper standards.
