Students Protest Food Contamination at Digital University Kerala After Lizard Found in Hostel Meal

Report

Students from Digital University Kerala (DUK), Trivandrum, Kerala protested at their hostel after discovering a dead lizard in their meal on Sunday. The lizard was found in the pickle served in the hostel dining area. The contractor responsible for providing meals to over 200 students has faced repeated allegations of food contamination. In response, he claimed he purchased the pickle from an external source.

Call for Action

Concerned students reported the issue to the Higher Education Minister, food safety authorities, and the police, prompting university officials to take immediate action. University Registrar A. Mujeeb announced a temporary closure of the hostel mess, with alternative meal arrangements in place for students. Additionally, the contractor will be notified to implement corrective measures.

The university has also offered students a “mess cut” option, allowing them to deduct fees for days they choose not to eat at the facility. The Hostel warden and Dean of Development, Santhosh Kurup, have stepped in to address students’ concerns.
