Thrikkakara’s Food Safety App Fails to Deliver

Report

Almost five months after the launch of the Thrikkakara Consumer Protection Forum app, which aimed to help consumers report food quality concerns in local eateries, the initiative has failed to produce results. An IT company from Thrissur developed the app, and Food and Civil Supplies Minister GR Anil introduced it in September of the previous year.

Initial Promises and App Management

The app sought to ensure access to quality food within the Thrikkakara municipality after a rise in expired food sales and the tragic death of a 24-year-old man from food poisoning in October. The municipality had initially promised that the app’s management panel would include officials from the municipality, the food safety department, the legal metrology department, and a police representative.

App Inactivity and Lack of Complaints

Despite its promising debut, municipal authorities have revealed that the app remains inactive, and no complaints have been filed. Municipality Chairperson Radhamani Pillai admitted the app’s shortcomings, stating, “The app hasn’t achieved the desired results. We will assess the issues affecting its functionality.” Varghese Plassery, chairperson of the municipality health standing committee, confirmed that the health wing has not received any complaints through the app.
