Key Update
Food safety officials in Warangal in Telangana, have uncovered the use of hazardous synthetic dyes on raw chicken at several retail outlets, raising serious concerns about food safety and public health.
The food safety department conducted inspections along with members of the Consumer Rights Forum and found that some traders were applying artificial colouring agents to raw chicken to improve its appearance. Traditionally, vendors use turmeric, a natural disinfectant, but officials found that some sellers had replaced it with synthetic dyes. A joint task force led by Food Safety Officer Mounika and Sambaraju Chakrapani carried out raids in the Pochamma Maidan and Kashibugga areas. During the inspections, officials caught traders using toxic dyes on raw chicken.
Officials Warn of Serious Health Risks
Officials warned that the chemicals used in these dyes can pose serious health risks. According to the food safety officer, such substances may have carcinogenic properties and prolonged exposure could lead to severe health conditions, including intestinal cancer and other chronic illnesses. Authorities said children and young consumers could face higher health risks from consuming food treated with such harmful chemicals.
Strict Action Against Violators
Officials warned that authorities will take strict action against vendors found using artificial colours. They said offenders could face criminal prosecution and the seizure of their establishments. Sambaraju Chakrapani said recent legal amendments now classify raw chicken sold at the retail level as processed food, allowing authorities to enforce stricter hygiene and safety regulations.
Awareness Campaign Planned
Consumer rights groups also expressed concern about the growing practice of altering the appearance of meat to attract customers. They said such practices could weaken consumer health and compromise food safety. The forum plans to launch an awareness campaign to help consumers identify safe and unadulterated meat products. Dr Pallepadu Damodar also warned that profit-driven practices should not come at the expense of public health. Officials said they will continue surprise inspections across the tri-city region to prevent the use of banned or harmful additives in the food supply chain.
