Viral Video Claims Plastic in Egg; Brand Issues Clarification

Key Update

A consumer has alleged that she found plastic-like material inside eggs purchased through the online delivery platform Zepto. The issue came to light after Shalini shared a video on Instagram describing her experience. In the video, she claimed that when she boiled eggs of the Eggos Everyday brand, she noticed thread-like, noodle-shaped strands inside instead of the usual yolk. She said that although people have often heard about fake or plastic egg, she never expected to experience something like that at home. She added that she was shocked to see noodle-like, plastic strands emerging from the egg when she boiled it. She further explained that they detected the issue only because one egg broke open. Otherwise, they might have consumed it unknowingly.

Company Responds to Viral Video

As the video began circulating widely and sparked concern, the company issued a clarification. It stated that the so-called “plastic egg” is a myth and that it is scientifically impossible to manufacture such eggs. The company explained that changes in storage conditions or temperature can sometimes affect the texture and structure of eggs. Such changes, it said, may create unusual appearances but should not be mistaken for plastic.

FSSAI Position on ‘Plastic Egg’

To support its response, the company cited guidelines issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The food safety regulator has previously clarified that no technology currently exists to manufacture artificial plastic eggs that resemble natural eggs. The company apologised for the inconvenience caused and assured the consumer that it would take appropriate steps to address the complaint.
