Deadly E. coli Outbreak Tied to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders Kills 1, Sickens 49 Across US States

Report

In the United States, Federal health officials reported on Tuesday that E. coli food poisoning linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburgers has sickened at least 49 people across 10 states, resulting in one death and 10 hospitalizations.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that an older individual in Colorado died, while a child was hospitalized with severe kidney complications. Infections occurred between Sept. 27 and Oct. 11, affecting Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oregon, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Colorado had the highest number of cases with 26, followed by Nebraska with nine.

Everyone interviewed during the investigation confirmed eating at McDonald’s before falling ill, with most specifically identifying Quarter Pounder hamburgers. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and state health officials are continuing their investigation.

Although investigators have not pinpointed a specific ingredient, they are focusing on onions and beef. A preliminary FDA investigation suggests that slivered onions served on the burgers may be a likely source of contamination, while the USDA is examining the hamburger patties.

Statement from Mcdonalds

McDonald’s officials stated that initial findings link some illnesses to onions sourced from a single supplier. As a result, the company has halted onion deliveries and temporarily removed the Quarter Pounder from menus in the affected states, as well as parts of Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. The company emphasized its commitment to food safety.

What is E.coli Bacteria?

E. coli bacteria, commonly found in the intestines of animals, can also be present in the environment. Infections can cause serious symptoms, including fever, abdominal pain, and bloody diarrhoea. Anyone experiencing signs of E. coli poisoning should seek medical attention and inform healthcare providers about their recent food consumption. This outbreak adds to McDonald’s challenges in a difficult year. In the second quarter, the Chicago-based company reported its first global same-store sales decline in nearly four years, as inflation led customers to dine out less or choose cheaper menu options. In response, McDonald’s launched a $5 meal deal at US locations in June, which has been extended through December, although the Quarter Pounder is not part of the deal.

Consequences

After the CDC’s announcement, McDonald’s stock dropped by 9% in after-hours trading on Tuesday. The E. coli O157 strain responsible for this outbreak infects around 74,000 people annually in the US, causing over 2,000 hospitalizations and 61 deaths. Young children under five are especially vulnerable to kidney failure from these infections.
