FDA Confirms Source of Contamination

Health authorities concluded their investigation into an E. coli outbreak linked to raw slivered onions in McDonald’s Quarter Pounder burgers. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that the outbreak affected 104 individuals across 14 states, leading to 34 hospitalizations and one fatality in Colorado. Investigators identified the contaminated onions as the probable source, emphasizing the need for stricter food safety measures to prevent similar incidents.

McDonald’s Takes Swift Action

McDonald’s removed slivered onions from its menu on October 22, leading to a halt in new cases. The company also temporarily removed Quarter Pounders from menus in 10 states as a precaution. Following the FDA investigation, McDonald’s indefinitely stopped sourcing onions from Taylor Farms at its Colorado Springs location.

Investigative Findings

FDA investigators tested onions supplied by Taylor Farms and an onion farm in Washington State, finding traces of E. coli. However, the samples did not match the strain that caused the illnesses. Despite this, interviews with affected individuals linked slivered onions to the outbreak, with 84% of respondents confirming they ate meals containing the ingredient.

Industry-Wide Impact and Legal Repercussions

Other fast-food chains, including Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Burger King, temporarily removed onions from their menus to protect consumers. McDonald’s now faces lawsuits from customers who claim they became ill during the outbreak.
