Officials Target Unsanitary Kitchens Across Kozhikode
The Food Safety Department has launched a surprise crackdown on food outlets across Kozhikode, revealing widespread hygiene violations in restaurants, cool bars, and bakeries. Acting on confidential complaints, officials inspected establishments in Kozhikode North, Kozhikode South, Vellayil, Kunnamangalam, and Cherooppa.
Authorities Shut Down Eight Restaurants
Officials shut down eight restaurants that failed to meet basic hygiene standards. They also issued notices to 12 cool bars and bakeries after identifying cleanliness lapses. In several cases, inspectors found kitchens using impure water and operating in highly unsanitary environments. The inspection team discovered that some establishments were running without valid trade licenses. “We inspected around 100 shops in five major areas,” said a Food Safety official. “Several had serious violations that put public health at risk.”
Fines and Warnings Flood the Food Scene
Authorities imposed hefty fines on violators as part of an intensified enforcement campaign. The department confirmed that inspections will continue, especially in response to growing complaints about roadside eateries and unlicensed operations.
Health Department Steps In Over Waterborne Disease Fears
The Health Department, alarmed by a spike in waterborne diseases, also conducted parallel inspections. Health squads tested water used in juice parlours and hotels to ensure safety and hygiene. In previous raids, authorities fined five hotel owners after lab tests confirmed the use of unauthorised ingredients. Inspectors also caught several wayside eateries committing similar violations.
