Low-sodium salt substitutes (LSSS), promoted for their health benefits, remain hard to find in most grocery stores across Chennai, according to a recent survey. Despite endorsements from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), the healthier alternative has yet to gain ground in everyday retail.

Supermarkets Stock It, But Small Shops Lag

The survey found that only a small percentage of local grocery shops stock LSSS. Larger outlets like supermarkets and hypermarkets are more likely to carry these products, but awareness among both retailers and consumers remains limited. The ICMR and WHO recommend reducing sodium intake to prevent hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Low-sodium salt substitutes typically replace part of the sodium chloride with potassium chloride, offering a healthier option. However, experts caution that individuals with kidney conditions or those on certain medications should consult doctors before using potassium-based substitutes.

Need for Policy and Awareness

The George Institute for Global Health India and other health advocates have backed WHO’s guidance, calling for national integration of LSSS into health programs. They urge food manufacturers to adopt these substitutes in processed foods and recommend government support to make them affordable and widely available, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Despite their benefits, low-sodium salts remain expensive and inaccessible to many. Public health experts emphasise the need for stronger regulation, greater awareness, and improved distribution to increase adoption and reduce India’s high sodium consumption.

Conclusion
