Nestlé to Remove Artificial Colors from U.S. Products by 2026

Report

Nestlé announced it will eliminate artificial dyes from all its U.S. food and beverage products by mid-2026, joining other major companies working to improve food safety. Kraft Heinz and General Mills recently pledged to remove artificial dyes from their U.S. products by 2027, with General Mills targeting cereals and K-12 school foods by mid-2026. About two-thirds of Americans, according to a NORC (National Opinion Research Center) poll, support removing synthetic dyes and added sugars from processed foods to protect health. Reflecting this, California and West Virginia have banned artificial dyes in school meals.

Texas Requires Safety Labels on Artificial Dyes

Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill requiring foods with artificial colours to carry warning labels starting in 2027. These labels will inform consumers that these ingredients are “not recommended for human consumption” in countries such as Australia, Canada, the EU, and the U.K. The U.S. banned Red 3 dye in food products in January, decades after banning it in cosmetics due to cancer risks. In April, federal officials announced they will work to eliminate synthetic dyes from the food supply by 2026, relying mainly on voluntary industry efforts.

Nestlé Advances Synthetic Dye Reduction

Over the past decade, Nestlé has steadily reduced synthetic dyes, with 90% of its U.S. products now free from artificial colors. The company commits to evolving alongside consumer health concerns and food safety standards.
