Raids in Kerala Expose Spurious Coconut Oil Marketed Under Fake Labels

Key Update

The Food Safety Wing seized 16,565 litres of suspected substandard coconut oil in surprise raids across seven districts in Kerala under Operation Life. Officials launched the action after receiving a flood of complaints about poor-quality coconut oil flooding the market, triggered by soaring prices. Kollam district recorded the largest seizure, with officials confiscating 9,337 litres. Among this was 5,800 litres packaged under the brand names Kera Soorya and Kera Haritham, both carrying fake FSSAI numbers and false manufacturing details. In Alappuzha, teams seized 6,530 litres of spurious oil. This included 2,480 litres sold under the Hari Geetham brand from a shop in Mannarassala.

Testing and Legal Action Underway

Special squads led by Assistant Food Safety Commissioners carried out the raids, collecting 11 statutory samples and 20 surveillance samples for testing. The Health Department confirmed that inspections will continue and warned of strict action against those involved in adulteration. Authorities have urged consumers to report any concerns about the quality of coconut oil via the toll-free helpline at 1800 425 1125.
