Visakhapatnam Launches ‘Eat Right’ Drive with 16 Special SHE Teams

Key Development

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has rolled out the Eat Right campaign and deployed 16 special Sanitation & Health Enforcement (SHE) teams to implement it. The initiative aims to protect public health and safeguard the environment. The GVMC launched the campaign after identifying that many hotels, restaurants, bakeries, and street food outlets in the city fail to maintain proper food quality and hygiene, leading to public health issues. Officials also flagged the use of harmful chemicals in certain foods, which increases the risk of cancer, heart disease, and kidney problems.

Teams and Operations

Two SHE teams will operate in each zone. Each team includes an assistant medical officer, sanitation supervisor, food inspector, secretariat sanitary secretary, and a woman police officer. They will inspect two to three food establishments daily, checking raw ingredients, cooked food, and kitchen hygiene. The teams will also enforce the city’s ban on single-use plastics, ensuring that prohibited plastic materials are not used by food outlets.
