key Update
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to Dr Reddy’s, Nestlé Health Science, Tirupati Wellness, Amazon, Flipkart and Netmeds over allegedly misleading health claims associated with products marketed for protein support and lean muscle maintenance. In a social media post on Thursday, the food safety regulator said it had directed the companies to explain why it should not initiate regulatory action against them over these claims.
FSSAI Flags Misleading Health and Nutritional Claims
According to FSSAI, the products carried claims about high protein content, lean muscle maintenance, muscle strength, immunity support and energy metabolism. The regulator raised concerns that the companies presented these claims on product packaging in a manner that could mislead consumers about the health benefits they could expect.
FSSAI said it had taken action against Dr Reddy’s and Nestlé Health Science over non-compliant advertising and misleading claims. The regulator also named Nex International in connection with the sale of unsafe food, and Shreyash Retail Pvt. Ltd. in connection with the sale of expired or rotten food products.
Companies Must Explain Their Claims
The notices require the companies to explain the nature of their health and nutritional claims and how they presented them to consumers. FSSAI will consider their responses before deciding whether to initiate further regulatory action. The regulator reiterated its commitment to ensuring food safety, protecting consumer interests and taking stringent action against violations of food safety requirements.
FSSAI Steps Up Scrutiny of Food Marketing
The action comes amid increased scrutiny of food product labelling and marketing, particularly claims about health and nutritional benefits. FSSAI has emphasised that food businesses must present such claims accurately and avoid creating misleading impressions about the benefits consumers can expect from their products.
The development highlights the importance of transparent labelling and responsible marketing, particularly for products that promise specific nutritional benefits. Accurate information helps consumers make informed choices and assess whether products meet their dietary needs.
