Idukki Intensifies Food Safety Checks Ahead of Onam

Key Development

As the Onam rush begins, the Food Safety Department has intensified inspections across Idukki to stop the sale of adulterated food. Three special squads, each led by a food safety officer and supported by up to three members, are checking establishments in Thodupuzha, Peerumedu, Devikulam, Udumbanchola, and Idukki taluks. The drive began earlier this month and will continue until Uthradam day.

Focus on Hotels, Bakeries, and Eateries

Officials are monitoring food production, storage, and sales points—especially hotels, restaurants, bakeries, and eateries—to enforce hygiene standards. They are collecting samples from unauthorised outlets and sending them to the Kakkanad laboratory for testing. Based on the results, they will initiate legal proceedings, and they have already registered several cases. Authorities imposed fines of ₹1.3 lakh during a recent Adalat in Udumbanchola and Idukki for multiple violations, sending a strong signal that they will strictly enforce food safety rules in the district.

Public Urged to Stay Alert

Officials have urged residents to report suspicious activities, such as the sale of unlicensed or adulterated food products. People can register complaints by calling the toll-free helpline 1800-425-1125.
