Water Crisis in Karumaloor, Ernakulam: E. coli Found, Residents Demand Swift Action

Key Update

Health officials have confirmed widespread E. coli contamination in both well water and the Kerala Water Authority’s (KWA) drinking water supply in Karumaloor, Ernakulam. Testing revealed that most water samples contained the bacteria, prompting residents to demand immediate action.

During recent inspections in Veliyathunadu and its surrounding areas, officials identified over 30 cases of jaundice. The disease claimed six lives, intensifying public concern over the region’s water safety.

Pipeline Leaks Fuel Contamination Across Multiple Panchayats

Officials suspect that repeated leaks in KWA pipelines have allowed sewage to enter the drinking water network. “Frequent pipeline leaks could be a major factor behind the presence of E. coli,” said a health department representative.

The contamination has also spread to neighbouring panchayats, including Alangad and Kadungallur. Alarmed by the findings, many residents have started testing their water independently, citing a lack of trust in official sources.

Authorities Delay Enforcement, Unsafe Practices Persist

Despite announcing awareness campaigns and penalties for sewage mismanagement, panchayat authorities have failed to enforce those measures. Their inaction has allowed unsanitary practices and the use of contaminated water to continue unchecked.

Karumaloor panchayat member Muhammed Mehjoob urged the health department to act swiftly. “Given the spread of jaundice near the Veliyathunad Welfare Trust, officials must act firmly against institutions operating in unhygienic conditions,” he said. Residents and local leaders continue to press for rigorous water testing, enforcement of health regulations, and urgent repairs to the water infrastructure to prevent further disease outbreaks.
