Madurai Celebrates World Food Day with a Healthy Twist

Key Update

Madurai district celebrated World Food Day on Thursday with a Healthy Food Festival aimed at raising awareness about nutrition, particularly for pregnant women and children. District Collector K. J. Praveen Kumar inaugurated the event at the Madurai Collectorate, encouraging the community to embrace healthier and locally sourced foods.

Anganwadi Workers Lead the Initiative

The food festival saw participation from around 150 employees across 17 blocks and 2,001 anganwadi centres. About 120 anganwadi workers, divided into 40 teams, prepared more than 100 varieties of nutritious dishes. The recipes featured millets, ragi, banana stems, moringa leaves, and nutritional flour, turned into both traditional meals and creative snacks like cakes and biscuits.

Art and Awareness Activities

To further highlight the message, the event displayed posters and paintings promoting the importance of balanced nutrition and healthy eating habits. The initiative underscored Madurai’s ongoing efforts to combat malnutrition and encourage the consumption of wholesome, locally available ingredients.
