Key Update
Starting January 1, 2026, packaged drinking and mineral water companies in India must follow a detailed testing framework introduced by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The framework mandates rigorous checks on quality and safety, ensuring that only safe products reach consumers.
Monthly and Periodic Quality Checks
Under the new scheme, companies must conduct monthly tests for microbiological parameters and quarterly or tri-annual tests for other quality indicators. This structured approach strengthens monitoring and maintains high safety standards across the packaged drinking water sector. Packaged and mineral water are classified as high-risk products, requiring strict adherence to testing protocols and third-party audits. This move ensures accountability and aligns companies with FSSAI’s safety standards.
BIS Certification Context
While the mandatory BIS certification for packaged water was removed in 2024, FSSAI’s new testing framework now serves as the primary compliance measure, simplifying regulatory requirements and avoiding duplication of certifications.
