A woman has alleged that her daughter consumed an Amul fruit yoghurt pack containing fungus despite the product being well within its expiry date. She shared photographs and a video on X (formerly Twitter), urging the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to intervene. The post, shared on February 13, quickly gained traction online and reignited debate over food safety and quality control.
Expiry Date Valid, Contamination Alleged
Ruchi Kokcha stated that her daughter had partially opened the yoghurt lid and eaten some of the contents before they noticed what appeared to be a fungal patch on the inner side of the peel cover.
She said the pack carried an expiry date of March 11, 2026, and therefore remained well within its consumption period. The images she posted show the packaging with the date visible, along with a dark patch on the lid. Another photograph displays the container and peel placed side by side. In a video,
Kokcha explained that her daughter had consumed more than half of the yoghurt before they detected the suspected contamination. She expressed concern about potential health risks and asked who would be held accountable if adverse effects occurred.
Questions Raised Over Accountability
Kokcha directly tagged FSSAI in her post and called for action. She questioned how a product from Amul, one of India’s largest dairy brands, could reach consumers in such a condition. At the time of writing, no official response from the company or the regulator had been made public regarding the specific complaint.
Social Media Reacts
The post has crossed two lakh views and drawn mixed responses. While many users called the incident serious and urged authorities to investigate, others pointed to possible cold-chain lapses during transport or storage. Some advised consumers to inspect sealed packs immediately after purchase. The incident has renewed concerns about refrigeration practices and oversight in the dairy supply chain. No official findings have been released so far.
