Key Update
In a major enforcement action, the Food Safety Flying Squad of the Food and Drugs Control Administration Gujarat (FDCA Gujarat) conducted a surprise inspection at Madhupura Market in Ahmedabad, targeting the sale and storage of loose spices suspected of adulteration. During the drive, officials inspected around 30 shops and firms. The team seized nearly 200 kg of loose spices worth approximately ₹1 lakh, citing suspected adulteration and violations of food safety norms.
Authorities Cite Hygiene and Traceability Concerns
Officials initiated the action after finding that traders were selling spices in loose, unpackaged form. They said this practice compromises hygiene, weakens quality control and makes traceability difficult. Under food safety regulations enforced by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), sellers must comply with labelling, packaging and approval requirements. Authorities restrict the sale of loose food items in many cases to protect consumers. Officials explained that loose spices:
- Increase the risk of contamination
- Often lacks clear manufacturing and expiry details
- Create higher chances of adulteration
- Make it harder to trace the source during inspections
Drive Aims to Strengthen Market Compliance
FDCA Gujarat inspected as part of its ongoing efforts to enforce food safety standards and safeguard public health. Officials have indicated that they will continue similar drives across major markets to ensure compliance and deter violations.
