FDA Cracks Down on Adulterated Food and Spices in Bengaluru

Report

After cracking down on the use of plastic sheets in food preparation, the FDA launched statewide inspections in Bengaluru to address rising complaints about food quality. The inspections targeted hotels, messes, and bakeries to ensure safety. During these inspections, FDA officials discovered adulterated spices and substandard ingredients, including jaggery, oil, paneer, and tea powder. These findings prompted further scrutiny of the food supply chain.

Increased Inspections After Food Poisoning

After a food poisoning incident in the Mandya district that resulted in two student deaths, authorities intensified inspections, particularly around eateries near colleges. FDA officials found some tea powder adulterated with low-grade tea leaves and artificial dyes to restore its appearance. “Most shops dry and reuse brewed tea leaves instead of mixing them with other waste,” an FDA official said.

Harmful Chemicals in Common Spices

FDA officials found that spices like turmeric, chili powder, and coriander powder were adulterated with harmful chemicals. They mixed turmeric with synthetic dyes like metanil yellow and added carcinogenic Sudan red to chili powder. The high demand and powdered form of these spices make it easier to mix in impurities undetected.

Health Risks of Adulterated Foods

FDA officials warned that regular consumption of adulterated food can lead to serious health issues, including digestive problems, liver and kidney damage, and an increased risk of cancer. Prolonged exposure may also cause neurological and respiratory disorders. “Spices contaminated with harmful chemicals like metanil yellow, lead chromate, and Sudan red can lead to chronic illnesses, including gastrointestinal disorders and carcinogenic effects,” the official explained.

The FDA is continuing efforts to remove adulterated products and hold food businesses accountable to ensure consumer safety.
