Milk Adulteration Prompts Sweeping Checks in SPSR Nellore

Significant Update

Following the recent milk adulteration incident in East Godavari district, the Food Safety Department has intensified inspections across SPSR Nellore district in Andhra. Officials have strengthened quality checks at dairies and sent multiple samples of milk and milk products to accredited laboratories for testing. On February 27, food safety teams inspected milk collection centres, bulk milk chilling units, and milk product manufacturing facilities in Buchireddypalem and Sangam mandals. The teams examined hygiene practices, storage conditions, and handling procedures to ensure compliance with safety standards.

Complaints of Artificial Fat Enhancement

According to media reports, Assistant Food Controller (AFC) G. Venkateswara Rao stated that the department had received complaints against certain milk collection centre operators. According to the complaints, some operators allegedly add external substances to milk to make it appear thicker and artificially increase its fat content. He urged the public to provide credible information about individuals involved in such malpractices and assured them that the department would keep the identity and personal details of complainants strictly confidential.

Surprise Inspections in City Areas

On Thursday, officials conducted surprise inspections in several city localities, including Magunta Layout, Balaji Nagar, Dargamitta, and B.V. Nagar. During these inspections, teams collected samples of milk and milk products such as curd, ghee, and paneer for laboratory analysis. If laboratory results confirm adulteration, officials will register criminal cases against the offenders under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Authorities have also warned that they will impose a fine of ₹5 lakh on traders found guilty of adulteration, in addition to initiating further legal action as per the law. The department has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that only safe and unadulterated milk reaches consumers.
