Deadly Milk Contamination in Andhra Pradesh Draws NHRC Notice

Significant Update

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged milk contamination incident in Rajamahendravaram that has raised serious concern across the Telugu States. The Commission has issued notices to the Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, asking them to submit a detailed report within two weeks. The incident, reported last month in parts of East Godavari district, has so far claimed 17 lives, while three others remain under treatment in hospitals, according to official reports.

Toxic Chemical Found in Milk Supply

Preliminary investigations suggest that milk supplied to more than 100 households was contaminated with ethylene glycol, a toxic coolant chemical. Officials believe the chemical leaked from refrigeration equipment at an unauthorised dairy unit, contaminating the milk supply.

Authorities first detected the milk contamination after several residents developed acute renal complications, vomiting, and anuria. Following the incident, officials arrested the milk vendor and launched a multi-agency investigation to examine possible lapses in food safety and supply monitoring.
