Dogs Tear Into Chicken Kept for Shawarma; Food Safety Team Shuts Koyilandy Shop

Key Update

Food Safety officials issued a two-day closure notice to a shawarma shop in Koyilandy in Kozhikode after street dogs attacked chicken that workers had kept outside the shop before opening hours. The incident took place at the Office Shawarma stall located near the old stand in Koyilandy on Tuesday morning.

Chicken Kept Outside in Uncovered Container

According to officials, the shop had received the chicken from a chicken centre in Thamarassery. Workers reportedly kept the meat outside the shop in an uncovered container before opening the outlet. Street dogs later tore into the chicken and scattered its remains along the roadside. The incident triggered concerns over food handling and hygiene practices at the establishment.

Food Safety Team Conducts Inspection

A Food Safety team, led by Shwetha Velayudhan and including Assistant Officer K. Aravind, inspected the premises after learning of the incident. Officials found violations of food safety standards during the inspection and issued a notice directing the shop to remain closed for two days.

Action Initiated Against Chicken Supplier

Officials also initiated action against the chicken centre in Thamarassery that supplied the meat. Dr Shwetha Velayudhan said the department had submitted a report to the District Food Safety Officer recommending further action against the supplier. The Food Safety Department also announced that it would intensify inspections at shawarma shops across Koyilandy in the coming days.
