Key Update
Four members of a family in Kozhikode were hospitalised after developing symptoms of suspected food poisoning following a home-cooked meal containing spinach. The incident has raised concerns over food safety practices in household food preparation.
Family Falls Ill After Home-Cooked Meal
According to reports, the incident occurred at Harisree Nilayam in Ambalammukku, Thamarassery, when the family consumed rice with spinach stir-fry for lunch on Thursday. Soon after the meal, they developed dizziness and disorientation and began showing symptoms consistent with foodborne illness. As their condition worsened, they sought immediate medical attention and were first admitted to a private hospital along the Thamarassery highway before being shifted to a hospital in Kozhikode for further treatment.
Doctors Monitor Recovery
Medical teams initially placed all four patients under observation in the ICU. However, their condition improved by Friday, and doctors later shifted them to general wards for continued recovery. In a related instance, a colleague who consumed a small portion of the same dish experienced mild discomfort and sought treatment at a local hospital in Thamarassery. She recovered without complications.
Family Details Food Preparation
The family said they prepared the dish using spinach sourced from two places. They stored one batch in a refrigerator after purchasing it from a nearby cultivated plot and also added freshly harvested spinach from their backyard while cooking the meal on Thursday morning. They reported that symptoms appeared shortly after consumption, prompting them to seek medical care.
Health Authorities Launch Probe
Health officials have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the illness. They are collecting food samples and conducting laboratory tests to identify possible contamination. Authorities said they will take action based on the findings of the probe. They also reiterated the importance of safe food handling, proper storage, and hygiene practices, particularly during warmer months when foodborne illnesses tend to rise.
The incident adds to recent suspected food poisoning cases reported in the state, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and stronger food safety awareness in both households and public food systems.
