Decomposed Meat, Rotten Cauliflower: Inside Kozhikode Food Street Inspection

Decomposed Meat, Rotten Cauliflower: Inside Kozhikode Food Street Inspection

Key Update

Kozhikode Corporation officials have stepped up inspections at the Beach Food Street after identifying several food safety and hygiene violations. They found vegetables meant for cooking and ice stored in unhygienic conditions, waste bins left unused, and food items placed along walkways, creating contamination risks and blocking public movement.

The officials launched this action after seizing stale cauliflower and other spoiled items from multiple shops at food street. During the latest inspection, they removed improperly stored food, a non-functional refrigerator, and perishable items kept under unsafe conditions. They also identified vendors cooking food on-site despite clear restrictions. The authorities warned vendors to comply with food safety norms and stated that they will impose penalties and return confiscated items only after collecting fines.

Poor Waste Management Raises Concerns

Officials observed vendors and visitors discarding food waste outside designated bins, which increases the risk of contamination and pest infestation. They have now begun considering stricter enforcement measures and penalties to ensure proper waste disposal and hygiene. The authorities also found that some vendors have sublet stalls and misused vending spaces. They noted that vendors are operating stalls like full-scale kitchens instead of basic vending units, which raises food safety concerns. Officials have warned that such violations may lead to license cancellation.

Lack of Infrastructure Adds to Risk

Vendors stated that the Corporation has not provided adequate facilities, especially wastewater disposal systems. They reported that the limited number of tanks fills quickly and overflows, worsening hygiene conditions. The authorities have stressed that vendors must follow proper food storage practices, maintain cleanliness, use waste bins correctly, and comply with licensing rules to protect public health.
