Scan Before You Snack: Ahmedabad Introduces QR Hygiene Ratings

Significant Update

Ahmedabad residents can now directly assess the cleanliness and food safety practices of street food vendors through a new QR code-based monitoring system launched by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). The initiative allows citizens to provide feedback and hygiene ratings based on the standards maintained at vendors’ places of business. AMC officials said the corporation regularly monitors the feedback and takes action against vendors found violating cleanliness or food safety requirements.

Citizens Become Part of Food Safety Monitoring

The QR code-based system aims to strengthen food safety oversight while encouraging public participation. By scanning a vendor’s displayed QR code, customers can access business details and submit feedback on hygiene and food safety practices. According to AMC officials, citizen feedback serves as an additional tool for monitoring street food establishments and identifying areas that require corrective action.

More Than 8,700 Vendors Registered

AMC has successfully registered more than 8,700 street food vendors under the programme so far. Vendors can register online by scanning the QR code issued by the corporation and completing a digital registration form. During registration, the system captures the GPS location of the vendor’s business to accurately record its location and support effective monitoring. Vendors must also provide details such as their name, mobile number, business name, address, and ward information.

Unique QR Code for Every Vendor

After completing the registration process, the system generates a unique PDF containing a QR code for each vendor. Vendors must display a printed copy of the QR code prominently at their place of business so that customers can easily access it. If a registered vendor loses the QR code document, the system allows them to retrieve it using their registered mobile number.

AMC Urges Wider Participation

The civic body has urged all unregistered street food vendors to complete the registration process at the earliest. It has also asked registered vendors to display their QR codes clearly to encourage customer participation. AMC believes the initiative will help create a cleaner, safer, and more reliable street food ecosystem by combining technology-driven monitoring with public feedback.
