Safe Lunchboxes Matter: FSSAI Issues Food Packing Guidelines

Overview

As packed meals remain a daily routine for millions of students, office-goers, and workers, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has highlighted the importance of safe food packing practices in preventing foodborne illnesses.

In a recent post on social media platform X, the food regulator urged consumers to pay as much attention to how food is packed as to what goes into the meal. “Pack smart, eat safe,” FSSAI said, while sharing four simple recommendations to make lunches healthier and more hygienic.

Four Key Lunchbox Safety Tips

FSSAI advised consumers to:

  • Wash, clean, and thoroughly dry lunch boxes before use.
  • Use food-grade containers made of materials such as steel, glass, or food-grade plastic.
  • Ensure containers have tight-fitting lids to prevent leakage and contamination.
  • Allow food to cool before packing to reduce the risk of spoilage.

The regulator noted that proper food handling and storage practices can play an important role in maintaining food quality and safety throughout the day.

Food Safety Begins Before the First Bite

Food safety experts say contamination can occur even when meals are nutritionally balanced if food is stored, packed, or transported improperly. Consultant dietitian Garima Goyal explained that using clean, food-grade containers and maintaining proper hygiene can help minimise the risk of foodborne illnesses, digestive problems, and nutrient loss. According to Goyal, one common mistake is packing very hot food directly into sealed containers. Doing so can create excess moisture inside the container, which may encourage bacterial growth and affect food quality. “Allowing food to cool slightly before packing helps reduce condensation and improves food safety,” she noted.

Nutrition Remains Equally Important

While hygiene and food safety are critical, experts emphasise that lunchboxes should also provide balanced nutrition. Meals that combine protein, fibre, and complex carbohydrates can help maintain energy levels, improve concentration, and promote satiety throughout the day. Hydration is another important factor that people often overlook.

Carrying safe drinking water and staying adequately hydrated, particularly during hot weather, supports digestion, cognitive function, and overall health.

Safe Handling and Storage Matter

The latest recommendations reinforce a key food safety principle: healthy eating starts long before food is consumed. Proper cleaning, safe storage, hygienic handling, and thoughtful packing all contribute to reducing contamination risks and ensuring that meals remain safe to eat. As awareness of food safety continues to grow, regulators and health experts are encouraging consumers to adopt simple preventive measures that can help protect both health and food quality.
