Key Update
The Karnataka government is preparing to ban the sale of junk food in and around schools to encourage healthier eating habits among children. The proposed restrictions will target foods such as burgers, pizzas, and other unhealthy products commonly sold to schoolchildren. Speaking in Mangaluru, Health and Family Welfare Minister U.T. Khader said the government is working on new measures to curb children’s access to junk food while introducing stronger food safety regulations across the state.
Focus on children’s health
The government says the initiative is aimed at addressing the growing health concerns associated with unhealthy diets among children. According to the Minister, regular consumption of junk food contributes to several health issues, making it essential to ensure that children have access to nutritious meals that support their growth, development, and overall well-being.
Food safety infrastructure to get a boost
Alongside the proposed ban, Karnataka plans to strengthen its food safety infrastructure by upgrading existing food testing laboratories. The government will also establish new laboratories under the public-private partnership (PPP) model to expand food testing capacity and improve monitoring across the state.
Towards a healthier school food environment
The proposed measures reflect Karnataka’s broader efforts to create a healthier food environment for schoolchildren by combining preventive public health policies with stronger food safety systems. If implemented, the initiative could reduce children’s exposure to unhealthy foods while improving the state’s ability to monitor food quality and safety.
