The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has stepped up its food safety enforcement drive, uncovering multiple violations at street food stalls across the city. The inspections, aimed at protecting public health, resulted in the seizure of prohibited ingredients and penalties for vendors violating food safety regulations.

MSG Seized from Street Food Stalls

During an inspection near the KSRTC bus stand at Bejai, the MCC Health Department found vendors using Ajinomoto (monosodium glutamate or MSG) in violation of food safety regulations. Officials seized the substance on the spot and directed vendors to strictly comply with prescribed food safety standards.

The civic body reiterated that maintaining food hygiene and adhering to food safety regulations are essential to protect consumers and warned that strict legal action would be taken against violators.

Three Vendors Penalised for Using Banned Food Colours

In a separate surprise inspection in the State Bank area of Mangaluru, health officials found three street food vendors using banned food colours during routine food safety checks. The MCC imposed a total fine of Rs 6,000 on the three stalls and cautioned vendors that repeat violations would invite more stringent enforcement measures, including legal action.

Authorities Urge Compliance with Food Safety Standards

The inspections form part of the MCC’s ongoing efforts to improve food safety and ensure that street food vendors follow hygiene and regulatory requirements. Officials urged all food business operators to avoid prohibited additives and maintain safe food handling practices to safeguard public health.
