A1-Free Milk Linked to Better Maternal and Infant Health

Overview

Researchers unveiled new findings at the 57th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) in Helsinki, showing that A1 protein-free milk offers significant health benefits for breastfeeding mothers and infants. The a2 Milk Company sponsored the research and conducted two studies in China, focusing on breastfeeding mothers and their infants, as well as infants who received both breastmilk and formula.

A1-Free Milk Boosts Gut Health and Reduces Inflammation

In the first exploratory study, 25 breastfeeding mothers who consumed A1 protein-free milk experienced significantly improved gastrointestinal health and lower levels of systemic inflammation after just 14 days, compared to those who drank conventional milk. Their exclusively breastfed infants also showed similar benefits, indicating a likely transfer of health advantages from mother to child.

A2 Formula Eases Discomfort in Infants

The second study monitored 140 mix-fed infants over eight weeks. Infants fed a combination of breastmilk and A2 milk-based formula reported fewer digestive issues, including less crying and discomfort, especially at the two- and four-week marks. These improvements persisted through week eight, suggesting sustained benefits from switching to an A1 protein-free formula.

Experts See Breakthrough Potential

Dr. Andrew Clarke, Chief Science Advisor at a2 Milk Company, described the research as a significant breakthrough. “These studies build on years of evidence around gastrointestinal health and reveal new insights into how A1 protein-free milk may benefit both mothers and infants,” he said. He emphasised the rarity and importance of such findings, stating, “Breakthrough research doesn’t happen often. But these results could reshape how we view dairy’s role in early life nutrition.”

Healthcare and nutrition professionals are expected to take a renewed interest in A1 protein-free dairy products following these results, particularly for their potential to improve maternal and infant health outcomes.
