Beware of Fake Mangoes: A Quick Guide

Beware of Fake Mangoes: A Quick Guide

Overview

Fake mangoes, or artificially ripened mangoes, are real mangoes that undergo forced ripening using harmful chemicals like calcium carbide instead of natural methods. Experts estimate that hundreds of kilograms of such mangoes enter the market each year, especially before the natural mango season. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) advises consumers to inspect the mango’s appearance, texture, aroma, and quality before purchasing.

Chemicals Used in Artificial Ripening

Several chemicals artificially ripen mangoes, but many pose serious health risks. The most common ones include:

  • Calcium Carbide: This chemical contains toxic impurities like arsenic and phosphorus, which can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, and even cancer over time.

  • Ethylene Gas: While ethylene is a natural ripening agent, excess or impure forms can harm respiratory health.

  • Acetylene Gas: Released from calcium carbide, acetylene gas is highly explosive and dangerous if inhaled or consumed.

How to Identify Artificially Ripened Mangoes

Use These Simple Tips to Spot Artificially Ripened Mangoes:

  • Skin Colour: Look for a uniform yellow or shiny appearance, which could indicate chemical ripening.

  • Smell: Naturally ripened mangoes give off a sweet aroma, while artificially ripened ones may have an odd or chemical-like smell.

  • Firmness: Artificial mangoes often feel overly soft or mushy.

  • External Damage: Chemically treated mangoes may show bruises, blemishes, or patches.

  • Taste Test: A bland or strange taste suggests artificial ripening.

  • Soaking Method: Naturally ripened mangoes sink in water, while artificial ones usually float.

  • Baking Soda Test: Soak mangoes in a baking soda solution for 15–20 minutes. If the skin colour changes after washing, they might have been chemically treated.

  • Matchstick Test (Risky): Lighting a matchstick near the mangoes may cause them to spark if they are chemically treated. Always use caution and adult supervision.

Health Risks of Eating Artificially Ripened Mangoes

Eating chemically ripened mangoes can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, mood swings, and respiratory irritation. Long-term exposure to chemicals like arsenic and phosphorus increases the risk of cancer and disrupts hormonal balance. Sensitive individuals may also develop skin rashes or allergic reactions.
