Report
The Ernakulam District Development Committee has intensified efforts to ensure the quality of drinking water, prioritizing public safety. This decision followed reports from Thrikkakara Municipality highlighting a rise in communicable diseases, such as Hepatitis, linked to contaminated water sources. The Health Department, in collaboration with Thrikkakara Municipality, will conduct joint inspections of drinking water sources. The Health Joint Secretary has instructed local authorities to ensure health inspectors work closely with officials conducting water quality assessments.
Focus on Preventive Measures
The press release underscored the alarming increase in Hepatitis cases in the Thrikkakara area, prompting officials to broaden chlorination initiatives and water quality inspections. These examinations will target potential contamination sources, including beverage vendors, hotels, and food manufacturing units. The Kerala Water Authority will oversee these efforts, including quality checks on water supplied by tankers. The Kakkanad Family Health Centre and the Kakkanad Urban Primary Health Centre have implemented preventive measures in areas with reported Hepatitis A cases. Uma Thomas, MLA, voiced concerns about the outbreak during the Development Council meeting.
Addressing Water Supply Interruptions
The Council confirmed that disruptions in drinking water supply in Kothamangalam Municipality and Kavalangad Panchayat, caused by renovation work on the Kochi-Munnar National Highway, have been resolved efficiently. These comprehensive efforts aim to curb the spread of waterborne diseases and safeguard public health in Ernakulam District.
