Food Safety Action Against Three Momo Shops
The food safety department has taken action against three Momo shops in Greater Noida after their tomato chutney samples failed safety tests, deeming them unfit for consumption. This follows a food poisoning incident on September 29, where more than eight people from two families fell ill after eating momos at Deepak Momos Center near Eldeco Green Society in Sector Pi-2.
Samples Collected from Other Vendors
On October 1, the food safety department collected samples from two other momo vendors in Greater Noida—Rajesh Momos Center in Tugalpur and Govind Momos Center in Knowledge Park-1. Test results for all three centres were received on Tuesday.
Failed Lab Tests Lead to Legal Action
Assistant Food Commissioner Sarvesh Kumar stated, “Following the food poisoning complaints on September 29, we took momo and chutney samples from Deepak Momos Center. While we are still awaiting the results for the momos, the chutney samples failed the lab tests, prompting us to take action against the vendor.” The food safety department will file a case against the vendors under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954, and pursue legal action in the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) court.
Food Poisoning Incident Highlights Concerns
On September 29, at least 14 people were hospitalized at the Government Institute of Medical Science (GIMS) after consuming momos from a local vendor near Eldeco Green Society. They were discharged the next day after receiving treatment. The food safety department received a complaint about the vendor at that time.
Ongoing Inspections and Results Pending
“After collecting samples from the vendor in Sector Pi-2, we conducted a drive to inspect other momo sellers in Greater Noida. The chutney samples from Rajesh Momos Center and Govind Momos Center, collected on October 1, also failed lab tests. We are still awaiting results for their momo samples,” Kumar added.
