Food Safety Authorities Crack Down on Tartrazine Use in Kozhikode Mixtures

Report

Food safety authorities have banned the sale and production of the popular snack, mixture in certain Kozhikode shops, in Kerala, after discovering the use of Tartrazine, a synthetic food colouring agent. Although permitted in some food items at controlled levels, Tartrazine is prohibited in mixtures due to its potential health risks, including allergic reactions.

Tests on samples from Vadakara, Perambra, Koduvalli, and Thiruvambady confirmed the presence of Tartrazine, prompting legal action against vendors selling the tainted mixtures. Affected establishments include Harsha Chips on JT Road in Vadakara, Wake and Bake Bakery in Perambra, Happy Bakes in Koduvalli, Brothers Bakes and Chips at Agastiamuzhi, and Riya Bakery in Omassery, Puthur.

What is Tartrazine?

Tartrazine, also known as FD&C Yellow #5, is a synthetic lemon-yellow dye used in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Commonly added to processed snacks, soda, and candies, it may cause hyperactivity in children and other health issues with excessive consumption. Tartrazine can trigger allergic reactions, particularly in individuals with asthma or aspirin intolerance. Symptoms may include hives, itching, and respiratory issues, making its use a concern in foods consumed by sensitive individuals.

In addition to its use in food products, tartrazine is utilized for dyeing wool and silk and is also found in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. It further acts as an adsorption-elution indicator in chloride estimations within biochemistry.
