Four Die After Suspected Food Poisoning Linked to Watermelon in Mumbai

Key Update

Four members of a family died in Mumbai’s Pydhonie area due to suspected food poisoning, police said on Monday. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause. On the night of April 25, multiple family members had dinner together at around 10:30 p.m. While others returned home, four individuals later consumed watermelon between 1:00 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. Investigators are examining all food consumed during the night.

Symptoms develop within hours

By early morning on April 26, the affected individuals developed severe symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhoea. A family doctor initially treated them before referring them to JJ Hospital for further care. Despite medical intervention, all four individuals died during treatment at different times throughout the day. Doctors attempted to stabilise them, but their condition deteriorated rapidly.

Authorities investigate the cause

Officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the suspected food poisoning. They have conducted post-mortem examinations and will determine the cause of death after receiving histopathological reports. Police have registered an Accidental Death (AD) case and continue their investigation. Authorities are analysing the food consumed, including both the dinner and the watermelon eaten later, to identify possible contamination. Investigators are focusing on whether improper handling, storage, or contamination led to the incident.

A similar incident raises concerns

In a separate case, a child died, and several others were hospitalised in Jharkhand after consuming contaminated street food. Authorities have launched an investigation in that case as well, highlighting broader concerns around food safety. Food poisoning typically occurs due to contaminated food or water and can cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, and abdominal pain. Officials continue to urge the public to follow proper food hygiene, safe storage, and handling practices to prevent such incidents.
