From Raw to Risk: Reused Oil and Onions Raise Red Flags in Hyderabad

Key Update

The food safety team in Hyderabad raided M/s Naseeb Birista in Kaithalapur, Kukatpally, on April 22, 2026, following inputs from the Special Operations Team (SOT). Officials uncovered severe food safety and hygiene violations at the premises. Authorities found that the owner procured used cooking oil and reused it for bulk preparation of fried onions. Inspectors reported extremely unhygienic conditions across both storage and cooking areas. Workers stored raw and fried onions in bags and containers placed alongside waste and discarded materials.

Large-Scale Seizure and Destruction

Officials destroyed around 1,000 kg of raw onions and 70 kg of fried onions on-site. They also seized approximately 480 kg of cooking oil after collecting samples for laboratory analysis. Authorities sealed the premises for further investigation. The Commissioner of Food Safety, Telangana, continues to intensify inspections across Hyderabad to curb unsafe food practices. In a recent inspection on April 18, officials also flagged a warehouse in Kompally for multiple food safety and licensing violations.

Food Safety Risk Highlight

Improper handling of raw onions can lead to contamination by bacteria such as E. coli, especially if exposed to contaminated soil, water, or poor hygiene practices. The recent findings highlight the risks associated with unsafe food handling and the importance of strict compliance with food safety standards.
