FSSAI Releases New Guidelines for Ayurveda Aahara Products

Key Development

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), working alongside the Ministry of Ayush, has released new instructions for businesses that manufacture Ayurveda Aahara—food products based on the ancient Indian system of medicine. These guidelines fall under the Food Safety and Standards (Ayurveda Aahara) Regulations, 2022, which aim to ensure these products meet both modern food safety norms and traditional Ayurvedic principles.

FSSAI Defines What Qualifies as Ayurveda Aahara

FSSAI defines Ayurveda Aahara as food prepared according to Ayurvedic principles, using herbs, spices, and other traditional ingredients meant to maintain health and balance in the body. The authority introduced specific rules in 2022 to ensure that these products remain safe, authentic, and scientifically regulated. FSSAI has released a list of approved Category A Ayurveda Aahara products. It created this list with input from the Ministry of Ayush, which oversees India’s traditional medical systems. This list gives Food Business Operators (FBOs) clarity on which Ayurvedic products they can manufacture and sell under current regulations.

FBOs Can Request New Products With Valid References

If a business wants to manufacture a product not on the approved list, FSSAI allows them to submit a formal request. Businesses must provide either scientific evidence or references from classical Ayurvedic texts listed in Schedule A of the regulations. If the product follows Ayurvedic guidelines and the evidence supports its use, FSSAI may approve it. Businesses can send product addition requests to:

FSSAI Will Announce Future Updates Separately

FSSAI plans to revise and expand the approved list over time. Whenever it adds new products or makes changes, it will issue a separate notification. This process ensures transparency and gives businesses time to stay updated. Dr. Alka Rao, Advisor (Science, Standards & Regulation), signed the official notice with approval from the Competent Authority. FSSAI encourages all food businesses to review the approved list carefully and follow all rules to ensure their products comply with both safety standards and Ayurvedic practices.
