New Initiative Promotes Food Safety and Clean Energy

The Goa government has launched a policy to collect and convert used cooking oil (UCO) into biodiesel, strengthening food safety, environmental protection, and renewable energy efforts.

The policy creates a structured system for collecting, storing, transporting, and processing used oil generated by hotels, restaurants, caterers, food manufacturers, and other food business operators. It directs authorised agencies to collect the oil and supply it to approved biodiesel producers, rather than allowing it to be illegally reused or improperly discarded.

Policy Targets Unsafe Reuse of Cooking Oil

The government introduced the policy to prevent the unsafe reuse of degraded cooking oil in food preparation. Repeatedly heating cooking oil can produce harmful compounds that may pose health risks. By ensuring that food businesses hand over used cooking oil to authorised collectors, the policy aims to keep degraded oil out of the food chain.

Supporting Sustainable Waste Management

The initiative also promotes a circular economy by converting waste cooking oil into biodiesel. This approach reduces environmental pollution, supports renewable fuel production, and gives a productive use to waste that would otherwise require disposal. Through this policy, Goa aims to strengthen responsible management of used oil while encouraging safer food practices and cleaner energy production.
