High Court Orders Investigation Into Mold in Unniyappam Prasadam at Sabarimala

Report

The High Court’s Devasom Bench has instructed the Sabarimala Special Commissioner to submit a report regarding a complaint about mould found in Unniyappam prasadam purchased by devotees at the Sannidhanam. A group of 12 devotees from Kadungallur, Kochi, reported the issue after discovering mould in the prasadam when they opened it at home.

Allegations of Serving Mouldy Unniyappam

The complaint alleges that all devotees were served old Unniyappam. To monitor the quality of prasadam, Sannidhanam authorities conduct daily tests on both appam and aravana prasadam in a laboratory, checking their quality and moisture content. The latest report indicated that the moisture content of the Unniyappam prepared that day was 12.6 per cent, exceeding the 10 per cent limit allowed for such prasadam. The initial findings suggest that the excessive moisture level could have caused mould growth in the Unniyappam.

Efforts to Avoid Supply Disruptions

The previous year, the supply of appam and aravana prasadam faced frequent disruptions due to inadequate production. To prevent a recurrence this year, the authorities prepared 40 lakh tins of aravana and an equivalent amount of appam as backup supplies for the upcoming pilgrimage season. Quality control checks for these items are still ongoing.
