Instahot Foods Faces Food Safety Violations, IndiGo Takes Action

Report

On February 12, 2025, food safety authorities inspected Instahot Foods Pvt. Ltd. in IDA Patancheru, Hyderabad. The company, an exporter and supplier for IndiGo Airlines, faced multiple violations of food safety regulations.

Cockroach Infestation and Expired Products

During the inspection at Instahot Foods, the task force found a cockroach infestation in the cooking and grinding areas. They discovered expired food products, including 1.25 kilograms of kasturi methi, 500 grams of mustard seeds, and 1 kilogram of Rai Mota (a variety of mustard seeds), which they immediately discarded. Additionally, authorities confiscated 1.5 kilograms of nutmeg due to labelling discrepancies, as they found that crucial information, such as MRP, Batch No., and Packing Date, was missing from the product.

Hygiene and Storage Issues

The food safety inspection team identified several hygiene and storage issues at Instahot Foods Pvt. Ltd., including decayed and spoiled vegetables. They noted inadequate storage practices, such as placing items directly on the ground, using corroded racks, and failing to implement a FIFO (First In, First Out) system. The authorities found objects stored beneath a leaking air conditioner, which could lead to contamination. They also discovered poorly maintained bins and observed food waste discarded in plastic bags. The flooring was uneven, and covered with food scraps, and the drains were blocked.

Water Testing and Packaging Material Concerns

The authorities criticized the water testing, stating that a non-NABL accredited laboratory had conducted it, which they deemed inadequate. They also found that the most recent testing records for packaging materials were missing.

IndiGo’s Response

IndiGo Airlines issued a press statement acknowledging the investigation into their in-flight meal provider. The company stated, “We know the probe concerning an in-flight meal provider. Upon receiving this information, we promptly halted the provision of products from them. We want to emphasize our steadfast dedication to maintaining the highest standards of food and beverage service on board.”
