Investigation Launched After Trash Found in Grains at Iritty Anganwadi Centers

Report

Authorities have initiated an inquiry into the discovery of trash in the grain supplied at Anganwadi centres in Iritty, Kannur, raising concerns about impurities and insects in the food provided to nursing mothers and pregnant women.

The investigation focuses on allegations of garbage being present in the food provided by the Anganwadi centres. Inspectors found waste and tiny insects in the wheat distributed to breastfeeding mothers and expectant women through the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) program in Iritty. The concerned recipient filed a complaint with the local panchayat officials, who subsequently raised the issue with ICDS authorities.

Distribution Stopped

In response, a supervisor and health department officials visited the Anganwadi centre where the complaint originated and conducted an inspection. They halted the supply of grains until they could verify the food’s edibility.

ICDS authorities acknowledged that similar issues have occurred in various locations. They have instructed Anganwadi workers to distribute grains only after removing any waste. However, Anganwadi workers expressed that separating trash from the grains and repackaging them is not feasible.
