Kochi’s Food Street Struggles to Take Off Despite Big Plans

Key Update

Kochi launched its first food street in September 2025 with high expectations, but the project is yet to gain traction, with only 5 of the 20 stalls currently operational. The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) developed the facility to promote safe, hygienic, and diverse food options. However, the space continues to see low footfall even seven months after opening. Despite floating tenders multiple times, officials have received only a lukewarm response from vendors.

High Costs and Limited Appeal

Authorities initially reserved 12 stalls for women, SC/ST communities, and persons with disabilities, but later withdrew these reservations after failing to attract applicants. High rental costs—around ₹40,000 per stall—and the area’s limited activity have discouraged vendors. Located in Kasturba Nagar near Panampilly Nagar, the site is still developing, making it difficult for businesses to sustain with fewer customers.

Scope for Improvement and Future Hopes

The project, built at a cost of ₹1.35 crore, offers a fully equipped setup with dining space, wash areas, restrooms, and parking. It is a joint initiative of the state government, GCDA, Kochi Municipal Corporation, National Health Mission, and the state food safety department. Officials expect the upcoming park nearby to improve footfall. Stakeholders also emphasise the need to introduce more variety and competitive pricing to attract both vendors and customers.
