Overview
The Food Safety Department, with the support of five special squads, is set to increase field-level inspections to identify unregistered eateries and food businesses in Kozhikode district, Kerala. Although approximately 80% of food entrepreneurs have registered with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), many businesses still disregard the requirements, despite targeted awareness campaigns through social media and outdoor publicity.
Mission: 100% FSSAI Compliance
“We aim to ensure that every unit secures mandatory FSSAI registration and operates with full safety,” said Food Safety Assistant Commissioner A. Sakeer Hussain. He confirmed that this week, intensified flash checks will start, covering all 13 circle offices throughout Kozhikode district.”
Fines for Non-Compliance
The special squads have the authority to impose fines of up to ₹10 lakh on food-based businesses, including hotels, bakeries, and roadside eateries, operating without proper registration. “For example, we recently uncovered an unregistered bakery in Feroke. Following the Revenue Divisional Officer’s order, the owner was fined ₹1 lakh,” Mr. Hussain explained.
License Requirement for All Food Traders
FSSAI’s latest instructions mandate that all traders involved in the wholesale or retail of fruits, vegetables, meat, and fish must obtain licenses. This rule also applies to vendors operating through pushcarts or petty shops. Despite widespread awareness of the regulations, some entrepreneurs continue to bypass the simple process of registration.
Non-Renewal of Registration to Be Penalized
The upcoming flash inspections will also focus on entrepreneurs who have failed to renew their FSSAI registration on time. According to FSSAI guidelines, businesses must display a visible copy of their renewed license at the point of sale. Non-compliant individuals will face penalties.
Exposing Irresponsible Operators
The special squads are focused on exposing non-compliant operators, including those running ‘home-made food’ businesses that break the rules. “Securing an FSSAI license is the first step toward operating safely and legally in the food industry. It cannot be overlooked for any reason,” said squad members.
