Consumers may need to exercise caution when buying turmeric after food safety officials in Patna detected lead chromate in 28 of 35 turmeric samples collected during a market inspection. The Food Safety Department collected the samples from around a dozen shops in Danapur market as part of a special drive against food adulteration. Officials used a portable X-ray machine to test the samples.

28 of 35 Samples Test Positive

The Food Safety Department found lead chromate in 28 of the 35 turmeric samples, while seven samples recorded zero parts per million (ppm). Lead chromate is a toxic lead-based compound, and its presence in food raises safety concerns. Repeated or prolonged exposure to lead can adversely affect health. Officials said adulterators may add chemicals to enhance turmeric’s colour and make it appear brighter and more attractive.

Portable X-Ray Machine Used

The portable X-ray testing revealed the presence of lead chromate in most of the samples, highlighting concerns over the quality of turmeric sold in the market and the need for stronger monitoring to detect food adulteration.

Food Safety Department Issues Advisory

The Food Safety Department has advised shopkeepers to source turmeric from safe and certified suppliers. Officials also urged sellers to verify the quality and source of food products before purchasing them. They advised consumers to exercise caution when buying turmeric and avoid products when they cannot verify its quality or source. Officials said sellers were openly selling some turmeric treated with lead chromate in Danapur’s spice market.
