Listeria Contamination Leads to Recall of Smoked Sausage in US

Recall Alert: Smoked Sausages Contaminated with Listeria

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has recalled about 100 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) smoked andouille sausage after detecting possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. Bourgeois Smokehouse, located in Thibodaux, Louisiana, produced the sausage on May 12, 2025. The sausages, which were weighed, wrapped, and labelled in-store at the time of purchase, were distributed to Rouses Market locations across Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. These products have been available for sale since May 13, 2025.

What is Listeria and Why Should You Be Concerned?

Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful bacterium that thrives in cold temperatures, making it a hidden risk in ready-to-eat foods like deli meats and smoked fish. Unlike other bacteria, it can grow even in the fridge. Listeria is especially dangerous for pregnant women, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems, potentially causing miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe infections in newborns. Listeria can spread to the bloodstream and nervous system, leading to serious conditions like sepsis, meningitis, and brain abscesses. Symptoms may take days or weeks to appear, complicating diagnosis.

What Should You Do?

If you purchased the affected smoked andouille sausage, dispose of it immediately or return it to the store for a refund. If you suspect that you’ve consumed contaminated food, seek medical attention right away, especially if you belong to a high-risk group.  By staying informed and acting promptly, you can help protect yourself and others from the dangers of Listeria contamination.
