McDonald’s Finland Fast-Tracks Fiber Lids to Cut Plastic Use

Report

McDonald’s Finland has introduced fibre-based drink lids ahead of its original 2025 timeline, speeding up its efforts to reduce plastic use. This initiative is part of the company’s broader commitment to minimizing plastic across its operations. By the end of 2025, all McDonald’s outlets in Finland will serve beverages in cups with fibre-made lids that are suitable for both hot and cold drinks. This shift aligns with McDonald’s global strategy to eliminate fossil-based plastics from its packaging.

Impact on Plastic Reduction and Carbon Emissions

The new fibre-based drink lids are expected to reduce plastic consumption by around 59,000 kg annually and lower carbon emissions, contributing to a more sustainable future. Huhtamäki, a Finnish packaging company, produces the new lids, which feature an innovative click-fit system to ensure a secure seal. The lids are fully recyclable and compostable at home, reinforcing Huhtamäki’s commitment to sustainability.

A Track Record of Reducing Plastic Use

McDonald’s Finland has made significant strides in reducing plastic in its packaging over the years. In 2018, the company replaced plastic lids on McFlurry cups with cardboard oatmeal containers. In 2020, McDonald’s Finland introduced cardboard cups for milkshakes and salad containers, and in March 2021, it switched from plastic straws to paper ones.

Commitment to Renewable and Recycled Materials

The fibre packaging used by McDonald’s Finland contains recycled content or comes from certified forests, ensuring that all sales packaging is recyclable. Olli Johansson, CEO of McDonald’s Finland, stated, “By the end of 2025, McDonald’s intends for all its packaging to be sourced from renewable, recycled, and certified materials.”

Anime-Inspired Packaging Partnership

In February 2024, McDonald’s teamed up with Japanese manga artist Acky Bright to create anime-inspired packaging. This collaboration was part of the McDonald’s, an Anime Version of McDonald’s campaign, which launched in the US and over 30 other markets.
